2009 in review

I realise we’re well in to 2010, but i haven’t forgotten to review 2009. Highlight of the year had to be that skydive in September. Although i added a whole pile of stuff to my portfolio & increased pretty much all stats across all sites, i was disappointed not to have gotten BeerChief fully launched, plus I should have done more with theleavingcert.com, but i’m making up for that these days ;-)

Stats for this blog in 2009…

Same stats for 2008…

Same stats for 2007…

So obvious growth, but of course i’m eager to do better & improve it in 2010. Anyway, 2010 is another year, this is what happened in 2009;

January 2009

I got BeerChief launched then i pulled the plug on it a few months later because i wasn’t happy with it. It should be relaunched in the first half of 2010. New platform, new everything… In January 2009 i also got myself a samsung nc10 netbook.

February 2009

Didn’t do a whole lot in February, nothing of any note.

March 2009

Introduced a new theme to this blog (the current one). Leaner & meaner than the previous versions. I also booked tickets to see Michael Jackson in London in July 2009.

April 2009

Launched charitybypass.com

May 2009

Launched a logo offer to help me raise funds for a skydive. Launched wifimapper.com.

June 2009

Launched iwantideas.com. Launched newmovies.ie. Passed 2nd year in college. Michael Jackson Died. Busy month looking back.

July 2009

Went to London. Launched hotels revealed.com.

August 2009

Launched lucky.ie. Got o2 mobile broadband.

September 2009

Back to college. Went to bizcamp. Skydive – One of those once in a lifetime things that many people would ‘like’ to do or say they’ve done. Of the small % of people who have this on their ‘things to do before i die’ list, i’d imagine an even smaller percentage actually do it. However, in September 2009, i did it and got the cert to prove it. Has to go down as the highlight of 2009.

October 2009

Got a new hard drive. Got windows 7. Got a new camera.

November 2009

Paris trip.

December 2009

College exams.

Christmas 2009

It’s that time of year again. Christmas. I suppose i could just copy last year’s post

Christmas for me always signals the end of a year. The period of time in between Christmas day & New Years day is probably when you’ll catch me at my most relaxed all year round. As soon as 2009 2010 kicks in, it’s a case of getting out of the traps quickly and making a good start to the year. That’s why i’m determined to get BeerChief online & finished by January 27th sometime in 2010.

Tomorrow (25th), don’t expect to hear from me… i’ll be online but probably just messing about aimlessly seeing what other people are up to. Happy Christmas to all my readers and take it easy until the new year…

..and change a few lines, but that would just be lazy ;-)

getting my time back

Today i finished up in college, informally. I’ll be in Thursday & Friday next week for a few hours to finish up a few things but apart from that, i just have my main Christmas exams left…

  • December 14th, Database Management Systems, No problems
  • December 16th, Web Applications Development, No problems
  • December 18th, Broadband Technologies, Only one that requires work
  • December 22nd, Training & Support, No problems

Although i have 4 exams, i actually have 6 different modules this semester, but 2 of them are 100% CA (no formal exams, just continuous assessment). Overall, i’m happy so far with how this semester has gone. College has destroyed my online plans for the last few months but i couldn’t do anything about it…

I needed to dedicate much more time to it than i thought i would, but it will be worth it once the results come out in late January. It’s all about the bigger picture and it makes sense that i sacrafice things short term to get what i want longer term. And that’s pretty much what i did this semester… i wasn’t happy working on college stuff, but at the same time i’d tell myself ‘tough’ – happiness comes after hard work and not before it.

Anyway, these exams should be formalities. That doesn’t mean i’m finished now and can relax or down tools – it means i just have to use common sense and look at past papers, get a feel for questions asked, scan material and get a rough understanding of it. After that, i place my trust in my ability to write.

Starting now, you’ll see me starting to work more online. I’m off until January 18th, so i’ve a nice long break from college

November 2009 Review

November was one of those months that will go unrecognised come January when i get my semester 1 results. I had a lot of assignments, projects and presentations. I hate talking about college on this blog, but the blog is about me & my life, so i can’t just ignore something that takes up a huge chunk of my time every day.

In the middle of the month however i managed to get away to Paris for Ireland’s world cup qualifying match against Paris. You can read all about that here. In summary, we were beaten by a controversial goal which is still being talked about by just about everyone…

Irish fans in Paris

Earlier in the month i also got myself a lumiz TZ7 (camera) which i got to really test out in Paris. I’m still impressed by it and hopefully there’ll be many more pictures & videos to come…

Moving on to software now and whilst randomly looking for some time saving applications, i came across windows live sync and created a huge post on it here. In a nutshell, it allows me to sync folders between my desktop & netbook over my local network (which means faster speeds).

I ended the month with three consecutive posts about college but thankfully the college posts will now start to thin out as this is in fact my last full week in college. I still have Christmas exams to complete this month, but i can already see the freedom.

Over Christmas, i’ll have at least 5 weeks off. I can’t say i need it or deserve it (in no other job do you get that much time off), but we have been in college non stop since early September which is an awful long time in the world of education.

Testing times in November

Starting tomorrow, i’ve an awful lot of projects and asignments and tests to get through. Some bigger than others but these mini tests and assignments all add up and they’re the difference between passing and failing. Do well in them and you’re set up nicely for the Christmas exams – perhaps going in to certain subjects knowing you’ve already passed them.

Here’s an example of some of the stuff i have coming up in November….

November 4th (Tomorrow): Broadband Test.

The subject i shouldn’t have. It’s basically ‘networking’ which is a subject i don’t specialise in. If i wanted to specialise in networking, i’d have chosen the dedicated ‘networking’ course, rather than my chosen area of ‘applications’.

In first year, both ‘networking’, ‘applications’ and ‘software’ are combined in to a common first year which is grand. Smart move as it helps people decide what they want to branch off in to. Why, in third year, i’ve got a subject which is 100% networking is beyond me. Of course i need to know about networks, but the stuff we’re doing is overkill as it’s geared towards people who actually like / want a career in networking.

November 5th:Training & Support – Helpdesk Report

Have to download & install helpdesk software and compare the two. Sounds easy but we have to configure them to carry out certain functions which none are capable of carrying out  Also have to give a short presentation on this on November 12th.

November 6th: Systems Admin Test.

It’s all about installing servers and hooking up clients, getting them to talk to each and that sort of stuff. Useful subject, but usually comes with plenty of little frustrating problems.

November 9th: Database test.

It’s a multiple choice exam – the ‘black ice’ of exams – on the face of it, it seems easy – you either know the answer or can find it by knowing what ISN’T the answer. On the flip side, i find that i know most of the answers but get fooled by answers which are very similar… these type of exams are not good for ‘skimmers’ like myself who skim the entire course without actually knowing anything in great detail.

November 17th: Database Group Project

As part of our databases module, we must complete a group report on a chosen topic. We also have to present it. Shouldn’t be too bad… group work isn’t a problem when the group is strong and motivated.

November 23rd: asp.net web application

As part of my web applications module, i have to build a fully functional website with a shopping cart and submit it by November 23rd. The fact i’m forced in to using microsoft access and visual studio to create it shows that we’re not exactly embracing open source technologies and when you look at it, we’re completely reliant on windows based software & servers which takes the fun out of this project and subject.

So it’ll be a tough month, but i will have a nice 3 day break in Paris in the middle of it all
