Office still going ahead..

Posted on Monday, March 17th, 2008 at 7:16 pm

Despite BeerChief going way over budget, (triple what i’d budgeted for infact) I’m still going to go ahead and buy myself a new office.

For my 21st birthday (3 weeks to the day), my girlfriend is buying me a desk and a chair, so that’s one less expense i have to worry about (totals over €300). I have my eyes on two of these samsung 20″ LCD’s

For the tech heads amongst us;

1680 x 1050 resolution
2ms response time
3000:1 contrast ratio

So that would give me 40 inches of space to play with – almost triple the space i’m working with at the minute  Plus the look cool too – they have a retro 70’s thing goin on and how can you resist that glossy black finish? Lets face it, i’ll be looking at these screens for the next 3 or 4 years minimum on a daily basis. They gotta look good

They’ll set me back the guts of €500 and a top of the range PC will set me back another €900 or so (Dell XPS with quad core, decent graphics card & 4 gigs of ram). So i’ll need about €1400 if i’m to complete my new office. Hopefully i’ll get a bit of cash for my birthday and put a dent in that figure, and if i keep nailing $1k+ per month online, i won’t be long paying it off..

It is of course a long term investment… it WILL increase my productivity, give me cutting edge tools to work with and surely, SURELY, i can increase my earnings as a result also

  • I have a Dell, nothing wrong with Dells! It's getting a bit dated and might consider building my own as i want a gaming PC.
  • I build all my desktop PCs. It's easier than you think. I've saved some money, and I do it for friends of my parents every now and again to save them a few $$'s

  • ah.. well i'm hoping i can nab a deal outlet deal... there was one (it's gone now) for around €900 incl vat... quad core, 4gig ram, 1Tb hard drive.

i'd be getting the basic quad core one at €899 and adding on an extra 2 gig ram and probably breaking the 1TB  so that would work out at around €1050..

word on the street has it though, that CPU prices will drop significantly next month so hence the reason i'm holding off and assuming i'll get my system for around the €900 mark
  • I custom built an XPS and it came out at over €2,200
.... How are you managing to come out with such a low price?

(I included a 24" monitor .... but even with excluding that .... your price is a lot lower)

Will you list the specs you're going for here?

Will you break he 1TB barrier?
  • yeah, i'd thought about that Carl, customized a dell XPS, then priced all the components myself and i worked out the difference wasn't huge, a couple of hundred euro tops.

i figured with the dell option it'll come build with no problems, and if there are problems, it's their fault - not mine

so that bit of peace of mind is nice, although i would like to custom build my own PC.

I'll not be buying for another month or so anyway so i might look i to this again...
  • I just invested in a 'new office', splashed out on the executive office chair, big enough corner desk and a few new peripherals - my system is virtually brand new so don't have to upgrade for a while.
  • You'll save a lot if you build your own PC.. it's not difficult.

I intend on building my new PC in a couple of weeks. Check out some of the 'PC specs - proposed' in the forums on http://www.buildyourown.org.uk/
