Today i was offered a swap deal…
This (same car and colour in picture, but the car i was offered isn’t in this condition)
For this (my current car – bought in May ’06 for €4k)
A 2000 VW polo with 15k on the clock (yes, 15,000 miles!!! unclocked as it’s been in the family all that time) for my 2000 renault megane (which has 80k on the clock, which still isn’t bad).
There’s a few reasons i stuck with my Megane..
- My Megane is a 1.4l, the polo is 1l, so you get that extra bite and power when you need it.
- My Megane has a cd player with steering wheel controls, polo has casette player with no steering wheel controls .
- My Megane has one little dink in it – barely visible – not caused by me, might i add
The polo has loads of dinks in it/scrapes and would probably need a bit of touching up.
- My Megane is the safest car in it’s class, with a 5 star rating, the polo has a 4 as far as i know..
- My Megane has front electric windows, not sure if the polo does.
- My Megane is bigger – more space in the rear and boot for passengers.
- My Megane has a few little touches like the wipers will slow down when the car is stopped and then go at normal speed when the car moves… it also has lock button which when activated mean nobody can get in from the outside – warning: do not use this for fun on your girlfriend when it’s raining outside The polo doesn’t have these..
Realistically, the polo is probably worth more and has a better re-sale value so that’s why i might be a big eejit for rejecting it. VW are also way more reliable engine wise. Add in the fact the polo has basically no millage on it, and it’s obviously a car that hasn’t seen much use so it has loads of life left in it.
I’m heading to college next month, which means 2 hours of driving per day up and down. I feel my Megane is more comfortable as it’s a bit bigger and heavier, plus it’s that little bit nippier for overtaking/accelerating etc…
I’m pretty sure most guys my age would jump at the chance to swap a Renault for a VW, but i just think i’d be swapping comfort for a status symbol.. what would you guys do?!
