March Earnings…

Having bagged $73 in February (shortest month of the year), i was hoping the extra 3 days in march would see me hit the $80 mark.

Not the case. In fact, i’ve gone backwards. Total revenue for March was $69 :???:

But looking at the statistics, it’s easy to see why and although my revenue has dropped, i’m continuing to raise click through rate through testing new ad formats.

The above are my adsense earnings for march – $58.59, plus i’ve earned just over $10 from text-link-ads. So in total, $69.

Quite simply, the impressions aren’t there. Last month, i had almost 25,000 impressions, this month it’s at just over 14,000. So a HUGE dip in traffic. There’s a number of reasons for this.

Firstly, one of my big 4 – roykeane.net has been delisted and de-indexed by google. Massive blow for me as about 80% of the traffic was from google. It was listed no.2 on google frontpage for ‘roy keane’ (which gets about 8,000 searches a month). Needless to say, that’s where a large chunk of traffic has gone.

Secondly, JPEGr was recovering after collapsing under it’s own weight. It was out of action for a few days and hasn’t really been the same since. But i’m determined to keep working on it and get it back bigger and better than ever before.

Thirdly, I have to admit i was pretty lazy in March for some reason. I’ve been working more at my day job than normal, plus i’ve been taking days off here and there to go to football matches and shopping etc with the girlfriend… So i’ve probably been neglecting my sites a bit too much.

But with 5 weeks left until i become a full time blogger, things can only get better. Quitting my day job will make or break me. If i can’t put in the work then, i never will. So a disappointing month last month, but i reckon i can top it easily in April. Things have started well with $15 in text link ads already. Add in the $5 in adsense so far (yesterday and today), i’m at $20 already for April (two days in).

Three of your last four posts raise an interesting point for me. You are concerned about how you use your time, you want to make money from your sites and you mention the Burger King scam merchant (and I assure you thats’s what he was).

I’m wondering what your motivation is. I find your blog interesting and fair play to you for doing what you are doing. I think the website thing is a very interesting hobby with the added bonus that you are generating a small amount of cash which should cover costs etc. but do you really believe you will ever even hit a min wage equivalent salary? I think you would make more money flogging the keyrings. I’m not trying to be smart with that last comment but I don’t think you are a realist when it comes to income. How many hours are you putting into the web work? What is your return?

For me, you should have a solid business idea to start with and drive sales using your SEO knowledge – you have demonstrated that you are ahead of the game on that score. But just having some interesting sites that don’t in themselves generate revenue but act as advert space – I’m far from convinced that this is a good long-term business model. Just some thoughts for you! Cheers.

    all fair points..

i’m fully aware though, i can’t live off $69/month  i’m also aware that realistically, the maximum i can earn at this moment in time is about $150/month.

That also, won’t be enough. But it’s a target i’ve set myself and a target i won’t give up on. I want $100 adsense income every month, and i’ll accept nothing less. It’s a personal goal.

so you’re probably wondering why am i quitting work if the max i can earn is $150/month. Good question.

BeerChief is a new project i’m working on (beerchief.com). It’s my first attempt at a ‘world-class website’. Success or not, i’ll be working full time on it as i believe in it 100%. If it fails – i’m broke and need to get a job to pay for college. If it succeeds.. we all know the possibilities.

Worst case scenario – i quit work, lose out on a few grand and go broke. With no mortgage or family to look after, now is the only time i can go for broke with my dreams. So it’s a question of how good my judgement is. Is this idea really as good as i think it is? Ultimately, the likes of you will judge.

Nice answer. I have to say I admire your attitude – and I hope that doesn’t sound too patronising. Best of luck!
