impulse buy a website

Just like in the real world, if you see something you like the look of, you’re instantly trying to look for it’s positives rather than negatives. You don’t WANT it to have bad points. Whereas if you see something ugly looking, you’re going to try and look for faults.

A car for example… if you like the look of it, has cool features and gets good reviews, most people will buy in to the hype and gloss and not really care or think about how it drives. If another car looks outdated, gets negative reviews etc… you probably won’t even sit in it.

Websites are like that. You can impulse buy websites, but you need the money, obviously. At the minute, you’re probably going to impulse buy a web 2.0, glossy, shiny site that appeals to you. Surely you won’t be boring and look at long term traffic prospects or PPC costs, market potential within the niche etc… ;-)

Part of the reason i’ve forced myself to design is down to the fact that it plays a huge role in how people view a site. In fact, i’d say it’s the single biggest factor in whether a user stays or goes. No good having valid and clean code with a custom built script if the site is just using tables, html and plain text.

It’s remarkable how many people CAN’T design. I’m talking about pretty clever guys who understand css / xhtml and have design software at hand… but for whatever reason they just don’t have the eye for colour or trends or whatever…

I was never great at digital design up until a few months ago when i started playing around… now i can design logos, templates, edit photos etc… that baby on the truthdream header for example was edited by me. Took a few minutes just to carve it out, tone it down a bit and blend it in to fit within the header.

A few months ago, i’d be paying someone $10 on digitalpoint to do that  It really is pretty straightforward. Have a look at my cool webmaster resources post and be inspired. If you have photoshop or fireworks or illustrator - don’t be frightened by them. You have to start somewhere as does everyone, so if i can do it, so can you ;-)
