getting a dedicated server

This blog is moving to a dedicated server, my current shared hosting package just can’t handle the millions of unique visits i’m getting per month
Just kidding… i wish
But i AM getting a dedicated server for BeerChief. Anything less wouldn’t do it justice. There’s no point starting off on a shared account, then upgrading to a virtual private server, then a dedicated, then a few dedicated… it’s messy, it will mean downtime and it looks unprofessional.
As we’ve consistently done throughout BeerChief’s lifetime, we’re putting our money where our mouth’s are. Dedicated servers don’t come cheap (to buy or rent). We’re looking at about $100-$150 per month from a reputable host with half decent specs. Split between two, it’s about $75 or €50 each/month.
But going with a dedicated server from day 1 shows we’re serious and shows we mean business. It should mean that BeerChief won’t crumble under serious digg-like traffic. If necessary we’ll enable hotlink protection which will reduce bandwidth even further and as our video section will be pulling videos from youtube, rather than locally, it means we won’t have to worry about video bandwidth either.
You see we’ve done our homework
We’ve also got a whole host of improvements lined up for BeerChief as we go along. We’ll be implementing those, plus taking on board all the feedback we can get and seeing what sort of solutions we can come up with in reaction to that.
So even if things start off slow, we’ll continue to work hard and build up a large community… we’ve way too much invested in BeerChief to let it slide or even sell it as the thought of NOT being able to develop BeerChief the way we want it to is painful ![]()

About time!
Funnily enough, I almost responded to your latest Beer Chief post about getting a dedicated server - because you’ll need one for that (although this blog and BC could easily co-exist without problem on the same server). This blog is really slow sometimes - but you’ll get that with shared hosting.
Good decision!

Sounds good, so do you have a definite date yet when beerchief will be launched?

no
it’ll be finished this week though (tomorrow), which will give us all of next week to do our own thing with it… after that, it’s all systems go provided we don’t run in to server problems or laziness
