dipping my feet in the domain name sea

I have about 30+ domain names registered under my name.

All registered in the past 18 months or so.

A mixture of everything really… .com’s, .net’s, .info’s, .co.uk’s, .org’s, .biz

Most i’ve done nothing with, but had good intentions to do something with (story of our lives, eh?), so today i decided to do something new.

I set up an account with sedo and have listed them for sale, with landing pages in place. Now i’m aware of the possible SEO consequences, but feck it, they were doing nothing anyway, and why not try and (a) sell the domain for a profit or (b) make a few cents out of it.

Well, to my suprise i’ve already got a €0.05 click on one of the 3 sites i’ve put on sedo. Only up a few hours  Better than nothing, eh?

Domain flipping has never been something that interested me, it’s still too unpredictable for me to jump in to. But there sure are some crazy bids and sales out there for what i would view as nothing domain names… my own domain names look like gold dust compared to some of these recent sales;

  • cashchecksonline.com – current bid of $2000
  • smspartners.com – current bid of €2150
  • dograincoat.com – current bid $575
  • computer-training.net – current bid $600
  • wine-alley.com – current bid $200
  • payperclickcampaignmanagement.com – current bid $150

It’s scary and great to see these domains going for that sort of cash. Being totally honest, i would have thought all were worth reg fee only – $8.

Very intersting, and very true. Domain names can be worth a ton!

By the way–Have you sold any yet?

no, remarkably i haven’t actually sold a domain by itself  hopefully that will change

It’s not just quality of the name, you also have to consider the current market, is it a name that a business will want? so I am sure those names you listed from Sedo that someone somewhere have a use for it.

    For example:
cashchecksonline.com – This will be a great name for a check cashing comapny

smspartners.com – online sms services will be interested in this one, “sms” is a common search word

dograincoat.com – any company will want this name, especially if they produce dog’s raincoats

computer-training.net – because of the hyphen, the search engine will see this when people search for “computer training”, one step down from computertraing.net, as the good one is taken.

wine-alley.com – It seem this name has thousands of natural visits per month, a online wine business will be very interested, as they will receive potential customers.

payperclickcampaignmanagement.com – You know “pay per click” is searched very often, by the domain owners, and there are billions of domain owners that just park their sites, and want to increase click revenue.

of course, just like selling a house, it’s only worth what they buyers will pay…

but my take on it, is why pay $2k for a domain, when you can get a decent one for $8

unless you have an established site with profits to back a new name, it doesn’t make sense.

the likes of wine-alley.com is a case of two vaguely related words stuck together with a hyphen in the middle. there’s loads of them available surely…

at first glance, why not go for ‘wine-lane.com’ which is available for $8? why pay $200 for wine-alley.com?

I understood you on the difference in price, like wine-alley.com, it has thousands of traffic, which you will not get if you paid £8 for a new name.
To develop this type of traffic, you have to do a lot of work yourself, as I am sure you did for your site, or I wouldn’t have came across it.
A name with traffic will worth more, like if a wine business wants to advertise, they can redirect the traffic to their site, it will cost them much more to advertise in newspapers or T.V. to get the same amount of viewers.

nice blog by the way! thinking of starting one myself, but no time…

yeah i understand what you’re saying, i guess buying a domain with traffic is a ‘lazy’ way to start a site

as for the blog, go for it and don’t look back – i haven’t  you don’t need time, just update once a week and build on it from there

    Dograincoats.com – $575, WTF!

I have around 100~ domains lying around, still need to flog them at a high-ish price to unsuspecting buyers…
