Lansdowne Road – The home of Irish soccer and Rugby is apparently selling the naming rights to the highest bidder. So it will no longer be Lansdowne Road. It will be The Ryanair Stadium or Eircom Park.. something trashy like that.
Eircom, fair play to them, have thrown money at Irish soccer over the years but they just aren’t ‘cool’. Everyone loves to hate them. Fans hate the big ugly logo on jerseys and that’s just the tip of the iceberg
So them buying the stadium name would be stupid imo – a complete waste of money.
The naming rights are for 10 years. And estimated at €20m, that’s €2m a year.
Lets assume there are 20 senior matches (soccer & rugby) per year, that’s 200 matches over 10 years. Lets assume the stadium holds conferences/underage events etc.. let’s say 10 smaller events a year. In total that would be 300 events (probably more).
lets say there’s an average of 15,000 people per event. That means 4.5m people will be aware of your name as they’ll be in the stadium. Factor in TV audiences, gardai, travelling away supporters, your name in fixtures, news, maps, all over soccer websites, forums, flags etc… that figure could be easily be 10 fold.
‘BeerChief Park‘ anyone?! I accept paypal if anyone wants to donate €20m
It would be a shame if the name was sold to a non-irish company. Guinness would probably be my no.1 choice as Guinness are ‘cool’ and you’re proud to associate them with Ireland and drinking, culture and all that. Eircom on the other hand, eh, no. Eircom just aren’t cool enough
