pligg, i’ve had enough of your spam

pligg spam

iwantideas.com has been live now for over a year and consistently rakes in about 600 visits per month. High quality, all organic traffic. It’s not much but i’ve done nothing with the site since i set it up. The ‘problem’ with it for me, is that it’s using pligg. In short, the site has been spammed so much it’s forced me in to switching platform completely.

Hundreds of fake users, spam comment, spam submissions. I’ve tried various different plugins and settings but there’s still too much of it for my liking. Maybe that highlights my lack of experience and patience with pligg, maybe it’s normal, maybe i’m spoiled by a bullet proof spam system on wordpress, but i’m not prepared to waste any more time simply keeping the site free from spam.

So i’ve taken the drastic step of moving to wordpress. I can make it work with wordpress, and probably make it work much better but up until now i’ve always viewed it as being too much hassle. All content has been manually imported in to wordpress (there wasn’t enough to warrant coming up with a fancy database queries), and i’m now just working on a new theme and testing some features.

It might seem like i’m hopping all over the place with projects – i’ve probably mentioned 4 or 5 in the past week alone, but 3 are pretty much good to go. A hotelsrevealed.com revamp, a new project and now this iwantideas.com revamp. All 3 should be live by the end of the week or certainly early next week.

It will be interesting to monitor traffic on iwantideas.com once it switches over to wordpress. WordPress is familiar territory for me so i’ll be able to maximize search engine traffic. It just makes more sense.

Sean, good luck with the change. WordPress is a fine CMS. For anyone else in the same position though, I invite them to take a look at HotaruCMS.org. It's where disgruntled Pligg users escape to – social bookmarking without the spam.

Okay, well that's not really possible since any site offering free link submission is inevitably going to get spammed, but Hotaru is armed to the teeth with plugins to counter it, including Akismet, reCaptcha, StopForumSpam, Captcha questions, options to put first X posts and comments in to moderation, user permissions to allow or deny posting and commenting, a block list for banning usernames, email addresses/domains and urls, email notification of posts and comments, etc.

We even have a Pligg Importer and all our themes and plugins are free.

So you set up an open submission platform. You admit that you haven't maintained it. Obviously didn't install or activate any of the numerous antispam applications. How this is Pligg's fault? Sounds like the blame is your own. Pligg has all the antispam features mentioned in the other guys comment and even more. Stay away from HotaruCMS should be renamed HorribleCMS

i have maintained it, or tried to, in the post above i meant i hadn't added any new content in a while… i had always monitored it though… and thought upgrading to pligg v1 and subsequent releases would solve the problem but no…

i also tried every combination of settings & plugins i could find… captchas were in place but were somehow bypassed. moving databases, manually cleaning the database, reinstalls, nothing worked.

Maybe I’m crazy but I like spam on my Pligg site. I’m very much interested in the social temperature and meter of the internet and seeing what type of spam comes in shows me what spammers are up to. It also shows me spam trends and to me, that has value. Again, maybe I’m crazy and maybe I own too many websites but that’s my 2 cents.

Hi Sean .. came to reading your post because after a number years with Pligg I am admitting defeat and saying good-bye. Whereas you simply started over, I am hoping to be able to transfer the content of 15mb into the new wordpress installation.
I will also look around iwantideas.com as you seem to have added a voting system
    Thanks for the post
