2010 tech stuff

I mentioned yesterday i’ve a PS3 on the way and i’ll also be getting a new 32″ Full HD LCD too in 2010. Will that be it though for 2010? Probably not.

Happy 2010!

I could do with a new swivel chair and this time next year i’d imagine i’ll be thinking about a new phone. My n95 does the job & more, but i’ll have had it almost 3 years in May 2010 which is a long time in phone land. I’d expect apple to be announcing a new iphone later in the year and i could well be buying one – simply for the applications.

I don’t need a laptop… my netbook gets me by when on the move or at college. My desktop & monitors will be 2 years old in May 2010 but i’d expect to get another 2 years + from them.

One thing i could do with is some extra storage space. I’ll probably invest in an external hard drive or two and set up some sort of proper backup schedule / system. I have an external 250GB drive but that’s not enough to back up everything i have…. A portable /’passport’ usb powered hard drive would also come in handy. USB drives annoy me because i’m so used to working & storing things ‘in the cloud’.

In 2010 i hope to get a new car though at some stage, so i could well just hibernate any cash i have for that.

Once i get the PS3 & TV my room will be choc-a-block full of pretty expensive technology (well, expensive at the time i bought it). I’d estimate everything has cost about €7,000 in total. Obviously the value of older stuff has plummeted to virtually €0, but that’s part and parcel of how things work in technology.

Because i’m aiming to build a career for myself in this area, i see it all as an investment and one which is already starting to pay for itself.

back to blogging

It’s been 5 days since my last blog post which pretty unusual for me. It’s probably one of the longest breaks i’ve had from blogging in over 3 years. I can use Christmas to shield myself from criticism though – it’s an acceptable excuse

Christmas 2009, Monaghan

So what have i been doing? Not much in all honesty. I haven’t even been online that much over the past few days. I’ll be at a wedding on new years eve (2 days time) and i’m staying in Dublin this Saturday (4 days time), so i won’t really get much done until next week.

For Christmas, i got some money and i also got an unexpected €200+ profit from my efforts on lucky.ie this month, so i’ve decided to buy myself a new TV. Of course it won’t be any old TV… i’ve spent the last couple of days researching.

Amazon.co.uk are probably the best value overall, however they don’t ship anything larger than a 26″ to Ireland. Pixmania, PowerCity, Komplett etc… all charge for delivery plus they’re more expensive than Amazon.

PC World, Currys & Harvey Norman don’t have irish websites proper irish websites, so that means you have to really work to get a bargain from a reputable retailer online. I’ve bought from German sites before (a few years ago) but these days the savings aren’t worth it.

Ebay? Well i wouldn’t risk it for high value, precious items. Too much hassle if something goes wrong. So really, the only option is to drive to the north and pick up 26″ + TV’s there, or else spend a bit extra and get the same TV here the old fashioned way by going in to a shop.

I’ve been in Currys here already and compared some TV’s to their UK prices. TV’s here are immediately 2.5% more expensive than the UK right now due to idiotic VAT tweaks made last year (which are now being reversed from next year). However in general, prices weren’t that bad when i compared a few TV’s in Currys Ireland -v- Currys UK

  • Samsung 32″ B530 in Ireland = €399
  • Samsung 32″ B530 in UK = £369
  • Samsung 42″ Plasma B451 in Ireland = €499
  • Samsung 42″ Plasma B451 UK = £449

At those prices, they’re actually taking a hit in Ireland at current exchange rates (£1 = €1.10). Anyway, I have my eye on the following;

  • 32″ Samsung B530 = £369
  • 32″ LG LH3000 = £329
  • 32″ LG LH5000 = £399

Specs wise, this is what i’ve gotten written down mentally; I’ve decided that i need a 32″. My current TV is a 28″ and it’s slightly too small to see in bed.

Anything larger than 32″ and it will probably be too big for the space it needs to fit in (on the wall behind my old TV in picture), but i wouldn’t say no to a 37″ if the price was right. Full HD is a must. 100hz ideal, but for the money i’ll probably only get 50hz. Must be black. Must not be ugly.

I realise some people will question the benefit of Full HD over HD ready, especially in a 32″ LCD. At a distance, i don’t think i’d notice myself, but if i’m only a foot or two away from the TV, i’ll pick up every single pixel – just like i do with my PC monitors. I can tell you exactly where my 1 stuck pixel is on one of my monitors & what colour it is. I notice these things straight away even if i let them slide.

Because i’m getting a new TV, i also decided to buy myself a PS3. Not really for the gaming factor. For the blu ray factor. I suppose the PS3 egged me on to get a Full HD TV, and then the Full HD LCD egged me on to get a PS3 and take advantage of it’s blu ray player. Most PS3 games are made in 720p, which is HD Ready, not Full HD. Same with Sky HD (isn’t broadcast in full HD). So HD Ready, for now, is more than adequate for the vast majority of stuff with a HD label attached to it.

Blu Ray is really where Full HD comes out to play and because i tend to watch a lot of films in bed, that’s my logic in going for a Full HD TV over the less expensive HD Ready.

A blu ray dvd player will cost €100+. A PS3 costs €300 and it’s an entertainment hub too. So in my eyes, it made sense to get a ps3 rather than a blu ray player, even though i rarely play games on a console. I already have the PS3 ordered with amazon. 250gb slim black version. So now i just need to get myself the TV

I’ll probably pick one up over the next few days / weeks.

Christmas 2009

It’s that time of year again. Christmas. I suppose i could just copy last year’s post

Christmas for me always signals the end of a year. The period of time in between Christmas day & New Years day is probably when you’ll catch me at my most relaxed all year round. As soon as 2009 2010 kicks in, it’s a case of getting out of the traps quickly and making a good start to the year. That’s why i’m determined to get BeerChief online & finished by January 27th sometime in 2010.

Tomorrow (25th), don’t expect to hear from me… i’ll be online but probably just messing about aimlessly seeing what other people are up to. Happy Christmas to all my readers and take it easy until the new year…

..and change a few lines, but that would just be lazy ;-)

snowed in for next 4 weeks

Today i had sat my last college Christmas exam. All of them went better than expected, so i’m about 100% certain i’ve passed them all which was of course the target. It means i have just 6 modules left to complete in my current degree course. 24 down, 6 to go. Pass those 6 in summer 2010 and i’ll unlock a new level in the form of an IT management degree

Anyway, the weather is terrible these days not just here in Ireland but right across europe & the US. Snow, ice, people freezing to death on the streets… seems rather ironic as heads of state are meeting to combat global warming

The weather doesn’t bother me too much though. In fact i enjoy terrible weather because even if i wanted to go out somewhere, i can’t, or it wouldn’t be sensible to. That forces me in to working on something because i can’t stay idle for long and i’ll usually end up doing something productive.

I have plenty to keep me occupied for the next 4 weeks (i’m back in college on January 18th), so although i may not be literally snowed in all of that time, i’ll deliberately snow myself under with work.

It’s been a long time since i dedicated time to my own projects (stretching back to last summer), so i’m eager to make up for lost time….

twitter texts in ireland

Twitter have officially teamed up with o2 to offer free twitter alerts. Any time you get a direct message on twitter, you’ll have that message sent to your phone via text message too.

Very handy and it’s free for all o2 customers, so you have nothing to lose by signing up!

O2 is the first carrier to launch Twitter SMS in Ireland so, if you are a lucky O2 Ireland customer send “START” to 51210 and either sign up for Twitter or activate your phone with your current Twitter username. Also, be sure to check out all of the cool commands we support.

Whilst SMS seems like stone age technology compared with the real time world of twitter, it is the email of the internet – it just won’t go away because it’s easy to use and everybody has a phone number.

If only Google would follow twitter’s lead and send out texts for free when you got an email ;-) That would be very handy…
