Charity Bypass Launched

CharityBypass.com becomes my first what i’d call ‘proper’ website… built 100% by myself.

It’s powered by joomla, but there’s a big difference between a default joomla site and charitybypass.com ;-) Usually, i’ll use wordpress to build a site. It’s quick, it’s easy, it’s google friendly. But at it’s core, wordpress is a blogging platform and that will never change. Building a community based site using wordpress is difficult. I wanted more of a community feel and more interaction with Charity Bypass and although you could argue it’s now very community-like at the minute, i have more plans to open it up further to people.

That’s why i switched to joomla for charitybypass.com – it offers me something different. For example, i’ve used a plugin to integrate google maps and locations with my own articles. I’ve also installed a small forum and changed the way joomla displays content. WordPress just isn’t built for that stuff.

But it was real challenge for me. There was a lot of non-standard features needed to get charity bypass to where it is today and i had to complete them all by myself… for the first time i’ve built a fairly attractive website with lots of features with no help or without outsourcing anything (i even designed the logo).

From design to database tweaks to problem solving to editing code, i got through it all bit by bit without any major problems. That’s good. It means i’m learning and progressing.

CharityBypass.com is one of my most impressive sites. I’d hazard i’ll go on to develop several other sites using joomla as i’ll have confidence and experience to do so. I pick things up quickly and although it took a month to complete charity bypass (on and off), i could probably build a similar site 10 times quicker now that i’m more familiar with how joomla works and the sort of stuff i can do with it.

  • 2 and half years ago, i didn’t know what SEO was.
  • 2 and half years ago, i was paying to get logos designed. Now i can create my own.
  • 2 and a half years ago, i didn’t know how to set up a website. Now i own and control dozens.
  • 2 and a half years ago, i started this blog with zero traffic. 1300 posts, 376,000 words later and traffic is averaging 353 unique visits per day.

That’s progress and it doesn’t happen by not working. Without this blog, there would not have been a BeerChief or a Charity Bypass or half of the stuff i’ve done and have plans to do. This blog motivates me to do things – i’ve called myself a thinker, a creator from day one, so i’m under pressure (from myself) to deliver new ideas, new content and new sites… constantly.

portfolio building

I’ve touched on this before, but these past few weeks i’ve been meaning to put together a portfolio section on the site. It’s important for a number of reasons;

  • it helps people get to know me
  • it shows off my work rate
  • it shows off my talents
  • it builds confidence if people ever deal with me
  • it acts as a motivator for me

That last point is the most important to me. If i’m being honest, it’s what triggered off charitybypass.com, my involvement with irishgolfer.ie, the ‘coming soon but i haven’t actually started anything on it yet’ wifimapper.com and several other projects.

I’m determined to build up an online portfolio most people will get lost in. I don’t like the idea of selling myself… i don’t think someone should have to ‘prove’ themselves in interviews or on the spot tasks, i do agree that pressure situations are good for judging people’s charachter.

However someone’s work, over a very long period of time, i feel, speaks for itself. If i get a logo designed or look at a developer i don’t give a damn about what language they speak, how they come across in emails etc… i just look at their portfolio, look at feedback and base my decision on that alone.

I’m not really a logo designer, i’m not really a developer either so why create a portfolio if i’m not aiming it at ‘clients’? Well, for all the above reasons. Several people now have contacted me directly through this blog in relation to working on projects getting sites started. They’re not clients as such.. i just call them contacts.

So it’s pretty clear that people are looking through the blog, looking at all the posts and then making a decision to contact me if they like what they see. That’s actually a lot of work – there are over 1300 posts on this blog now. So for the reason above, plus the fact that i think it helps sum me and my work up better, i think an online portfolio is not ‘just another’ feature to add to the site, it’s an essential one if i’m to progress online and continue to gain contacts, friends and expand my portfolio.

I have most of the text complete for this new portfolio section… now i just have to add some classy images and figure out the best way to organize it and add it to the site. Should be up and running within a couple of weeks though.

full of confidence

Whilst the world may be falling apart and most people (and economies) are in a state of depression and recession, i’ve never been more optimistic…

  • Charity Bypass will be launching on Thursday and it’s looking really well.
  • There’ll be a new portfolio section coming to this blog over the next week or two.
  • Work will start on a new .ie project shortly too…
  • I’ll be kicking things up a notch on irishgolfer.ie
  • Plans will be put in place to bring BeerChief back to life with a ‘version 3′.
  • Work will begin on wifimapper.com too.

Surrounding myself with work and projects seems to be paying off. I’ve got so much to do, i really shouldn’t writing this blog post or taking time to think  But that pressure is what fuels me. Without it, i’d probably be playing games or just surfing the internet… The pressure of more work forces me in to getting rid of a backlog of work.

BeerChief remains my most exciting project, my largest project, my most expensive project… we launched it last summer publicly and it’ll be the same story this summer, only this time it’s all systems go and it’ll be make or break time. So long as i’m working on it, it’s only going to go in one direction. It may take a while, but it will get there.

College got in the way twice of BeerChief in the last 12 months… going back to college after summer and christmas holidays reduced my work rate and at times, i ended up being shut off from the internet all together, much to my frustration.

What will be different this summer? I’ll just be much more motivated and focused. I know more, i can do more, i have more experience than this time last year. College will get shoved in to a corner of my brain and it will be replaced once again by BeerChief and my many other projects.

3rd year hear i come!

I’ve yet to get official confirmation of all my results but i’m pretty confident i can mark myself at this stage and and for the sake of agument here, i’ll underestimate any results i haven’t got back yet. I’ve got 6 exams this summer. I had 6 at christmas and passed them all.

I had pneumonia at christmas, so i could easily have put them off until now, but that would mean i’d have 12 to look forward to – not a nice thought. I had the vision and cop on to realise putting them off would be a big mistake. Yes…. even it had of impacted on my health it would have be worth it and i’d do it all again tomorrow. Why? Because i’m not happy until i achieve things. My health is important, undoubtedly, but my mental health is more important. If i’m not happy, i’m not healthy. And i’m only happy when i have things to do, goals to go after.

Anyway, here’s the subjects and results i have so far;

  • Databases – 33%/50% – just need 2% out of 50% in my summer exam to pass
  • Networking – 15%/30% – need 20% out of 70% in summer to pass – probably the toughest subject, but all i need is 29% out of 100% in the summer exam to pass
  • *Operating Systems – 35%/50% – already passed subject – just playing for pride in summer exam
  • Professional Issues – 27%/40% – need 8% out of 60% to pass. Joke of a subject, a lot of it is bluff work and common sense – just have to turn up to pass.
  • *Software Product Support – 20%/30% – need 15%/70% to pass, shouldn’t be a problem, easy enough subject.
  • *Object Based Development – 40%/50% – already passed subject. Just playing from pride in summer exam.

*Not confirmed yet

So out of the 250 marks available in CA marks, i’ve gotten about 170. Average of 68%. That’s the first time i’ve sat down and gone through the stats so i’m delighted with that. I’ve already passed 2 subjects, and 2 others are walks in the walk where i need to pick up single figure percentages to pass. The only tough cookies on paper are networking and software product support.

I say *tough*, i can afford to fail both summer exams and still pass the subjects  So unless i fail very badly, it doesn’t look like i’ll have any problems. Networking is the only subject that will require some degree of work. It’s my least favourite subject too (no coincidence). But even in that subject i feel i know enough to pass… i’ve still yet to fail an exam this college year so things are all going smoothly. Come to think of it, i never failed an exam last year either until it came to summer exams…

Unlike last summer though, i can plough on with my own projects without any distractions… i won’t be failing this time around.

Charity Bypass Launching Thursday

CharityBypass.com will be revealed launched this Thursday. You’ve been warned ;-)

A couple of weeks of hard work will finally pay off and i can then move on to some of my many other projects. This one’s a keeper though.
