Samsung NC20 – what are they playing at?

Just a couple of weeks ago, i tipped Samsung to bring out a new netbook as i’ve been following the netbook market pretty closely over the last few months…

Dual Core Atoms ready and rumors of an NC11 with vista pre-installed. I’ll be holding off until the new year to see how this pans out.
NC10′s are already in short supply so i’d imagine they’ll be taking out a new line in the not so distant future to cash in on this netbook craze

Turns out i was bang on the money as the Samsung NC20 has been leaked today. I also suggested they’d bring out a new netbook to ‘cash in’ on the NC10′s runaway success. To me, that’s exactly what they’ve done with the NC20 and it’s a huge own goal for a number of reasons.

samsungnc20

First of all the NC20 has a 12.1 inch display. That’s not a netbook! 12.1 inch display is classified as an untraportable, not a netbook.

Why would i buy the NC20 over an NC10? If i’m buying a netbook i want something smaller than an ultraportable, as light as possible and with great battery life. Well the NC20 is the same size as an ultraportable, heavier than most netbooks and i can only assume has a battery life that pales in comparason to the NC10 (given the fact the screen is 2 inches bigger).

Specs wise, apart from the CPU, it’s identical to the NC10. No improvements anywhere…

Now maybe this is just really poor categorization by Samsung, but if you’re gonna call this machine an NC20, you automatically assume it’s an upgrade from the NC10 which is an out and out netbook leader. That’s not the case at all in my eyes. Assuming the battery life is worse than the NC10′s, i’d call this a downgrade.
It’ll launch at $642 which is a joke. The NC10 is around $475 at the minute and i’d imagine will only drop further in the new year.

So to recap;

  • 12.1 inch display
  • 3.3 pounds (NC10 is 2.8 pounds)
  • $642

I can’t see why this is being called a netbook as for roughly the same price, you could have something like this. Both 12.1 inches and the same price but specs wise, the samsung gets annihilated. Sure the samsung will be lighter (by 1 pound) and have a slightly better battery life, but given a straight choice between the NC20 and that Acer i’ve linked to, i can’t see many choosing the samsung.

So the only conclusion i draw is that the NC20 is a rushed job by samsung and they’ve opted to cash in quickly while the going’s good rather than develop a worthy upgrade to replace the NC10. It’s almost as if some top dog looking for profits in samsung has pushed this out on the basis that the NC10 can do no wrong, so why not change a few minor specs, up the price and rename it – people will buy it because it’s new.

Unless the battery life is something ridiculous or groundbreaking like 10 hours + there’s no way the NC20 will be a hit. Not at that price, not with those specs. If they reduce the price to match the NC10, it’ll sell but even then the NC10 would still be the wiser option.

BeerChief wheels back in motion

Since July, not much work has been done on BeerChief. Things started off well launching in private BETA testing. We got great feedback and put together plans for a version 2 but then we ran in to money problems, work was put on hold and before i knew it i was back at college and couldn’t find the time to do anything. Really, to do things right, you need a few weeks clear from everything. No distractions. That’s exactly what i have starting tomorrow once i finish my last college exam.

beerchief-plans.jpg

This weekend, i’ve put my BeerChief hat on again though and have begun putting together plans for our next big milestone – public release. I’ve penned in Tuesday, 27th January as launch day and i’ll do my utmost to hit it on time and on budget.

The site will be unrecognizable once launched – a complete overhaul is in store – a world apart from our existing site.

From then on it’s simply a case of getting people through the proverbial doors. I’ll be revamping our blog and using it as a magnet to draw people in to BeerChief. Once we get to that stage, BeerChief then becomes a ‘real’ asset in my eyes and starts to rise in value – it can only go up.

We’d be idiots to sell it anytime soon, but we’d also be idiots to hang on to it and potentially let it suffer if we can’t back it with cold hard cash and hardware. So although the site won’t be sold, we might have to shrink our slices of the cake in return for cash in the future – all with a view to improving BeerChief of course.

So starting this week, i’ll be talking to plenty of people and will get things moving ASAP.

New Theme for 2009

I mentioned before that this blog would be undergoing major surgery shortly. I’ve already begun exploring some possible options but here are a list of changes that i’ve already decided on;

  • A photo section – which displays all my flickr photos. I currently just pull the latest 6 pictures and place them on the homepage but i want a dedicated section as photo’s are an important part of blogging and getting personal.
  • Portfolio section – it’ll be a dedicated page which details all my major past & current online projects. Designed to sell myself & my talents more – simple as that.
  • Pagination on homepage – at the minute, the only way you can access past posts is through the archives page. 5 posts remain on the homepage but after that, they disappear. Given the fact i blog more than most, it’s easy to miss some posts (although not if you subscribe in an RSS reader) so i’ll be introducing page numbers to encourage people to look at more posts.
  • AJAX – The homepage lacks AJAX features and not only does that result in more page loads and waiting, but it’s starting to look quite retro now WITHOUT some elements of AJAX. AJAX is basically loading new information without refreshing the entire page. You see it on gmail for example.
  • Lighter colour scheme – in order to conform with modern styles i’ll be ditching the relatively dark colour scheme i have at present and replacing it with a much lighter one.
  • Emphasis on RSS subscriptions. I’ll have an email subscribe box on the site and i’ll be pushing RSS more on this new theme. On that note, i’ll also be blogging about RSS shortly and why you should make use of it if you’re not already.

I’ll be working on this myself and probably modifying an existing theme heavily, using bits and pieces of other themes to guide me. That’ll get me off to a good start in 2009 – i should see an increase in traffic and more RSS subscriptions. Although college has somewhat stunted my blogging for the last few months, i shouldn’t have that problem in 2009 as i’ll have a netbook with me at all times – allowing me to ‘write on thought’.

I’ll also be condensing my portfolio of sites and domains – selling off the stuff i have no time for. This blog, BeerChief, theleavingcert.com and my jackpot network are safe. They’ll all be developed and enhanced in some way over the next few months. After that, the rest could all go, i’ll have to analyse their potential and see what i could get for them.

The likes of chromeguide.com, famousnerd.com, closelyguarded.com…. these are all nice little sites that i really have no plans to do anything with. Hanging on to them may be wise as the domains are all valuable and 10 years down the line, who knows what two word domains will be worth? On the flip side, any cash i get can be ploughed in to larger projects. For example i could sell 4 or 5 sites and use the money to develop one biggish site or simply improve some of my existing sites.

Exams all but over

I had my 5th exam today in as many days, leaving just one more to go on Monday. That exam is only worth 30% of the marks for the module so it’s also the least important of all my exams. So it’s time switch off from college and get back in to the swing of things working online – something i haven’t really done since the summer. BeerChief will be completed in January now (i know, i know, i say that every month) so i’ll also give that priority and try to make sure it launches as smoothly as possible.

Anyway, before i start talking about plans online, i’ll grade myself on these exams and then compare my marking with my actual results when they come out in January. I don’t know how many people do this, but at the end of every exam i always go through my own paper and mark it myself with a neutral attitude. I first mark it really harshly and then mark it relatively easy and what i normally find is that my actual real result lies somewhere in the middle of my own harsh and easy marking. So here’s what i reckon i got;

  • Data Analysis = 60%
  • Networking = 45%
  • Hardware = 56%
  • Interpersonal Communications = 70%
  • Requirements Modeling = 71%
  • Web Client Programming = 63%

Overall Average = 61%

I’ve been fair with marks too, so i don’t believe my overall average will be any less than that figure. 60%+ is a nice safe figure – it shows i know too much to get in to trouble but don’t know enough to be classed as a genius. I can live with that as i’ve yet to really hurt myself in terms of studying or learning… i feel i can step it up another gear when required which won’t really be until 2011 when /if i go on and do a 4th year.

It’s nice to know these exams are out of the way and dead and buried as far as i’m concerned. Job done from Sep – Dec. I can also enjoy my month off from college :mrgreen:

That’s the way to shoe it!

A few days ago, George Bush paid a farewell visit to Iraq. Some of you may remember some historic images of an elderly Iraqi man beating a statue of Saddam Hussein with his shoe – apparantly the ultimate insult in that part of the world.

Anyway, whilst Bush was standing at a podium with the Iraqi leader, some mad journalist whipped off his shoe and fired it at the American President. He missed. Or rather, Bush ducked – showing cat-like reflexes. The journalist then had time to take off his other shoe and have a second go but unfortunately missed again. Judging by the distance and pace at which they were thrown, it was clear this guy had been practicing. Had Bush not ducked, it would have hit him square in the face.

After that, about 200 body guards came in to the room and pinned the guy down. Now, he’s facing up to 15 years in prison for ‘attempted murder’ :roll:

Anyway, as you’d expect, there’s been tonnes of jokes and gags made out of this. Here’s some of my favourite;

Unfortunately, Bush will probably never see any of these as he’s clearly not a technology enthusiast… :roll:

He is extremely well up on political affairs though as these videos clearly show….
