18 random website ideas..

For the past few days, i’ve been adding to this list and digging up old ideas i’ve had.. hopefully they’ll inspire/help/motivate some of you guys and get those creative juices flowing  Let me know what you think.. Some are a bit stupid, i’ll admit, but others a hidden gems

Update: In June 2009, i launched a new venture called iwantideas.com which offers more website ideas!

iwantideas.com logo

U-hated

Social networking site which allows you to add your enemies, ex-girlfriends, companies, bands you hate, teams you hate to you profile.. The idea is that we find out who the most hated people are on the net and they get shamed with frontpage status..

Blank Website

I create a completely blank website with no content, no links, nothing on it. I then order reviews and pay for linkbacks to it and see how people react and if they accept/reject the review requests.. thus, i’ll find out who’s a money grabber and who actually cares about their readers, who they link to etc..

Super Teddy

I buy a teddy, then post him to someone in a different country. That person then posts the teddy to another person in another country and so on.. all the time, the teddy is pictured at famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, Statue of Liberty etc.. and the pictures and blog entries from owners are put up on his website. He then becomes the most famous teddy on the world..

Internet Pyranha’s

This is a community of do-gooders who can’t stand spam and scammers.. the Internet Pyranha community (name after the pyranha fish) target individual websites/email addresses one at a time and spam them with hate emails and stupid comments until they change their ways or get fed up of being spammed and take down the website.

De-pimp my ride

This is a community which specializes in de-pimping cars/bikes/buses and restoring them to their original state. Tutorials are given on how to take off all that extra plastic exterior and the go-faster stripes. The community also gathers videos/pictures of boy racers in their pimped out rides and tries to contact the owners and offer their knowledge/experience in how to de-pimp a car.

My Arse

Social networking site which displays people’s arses and their friends arse’s. Also has a hotornot type rating feature and widgets which can be placed on your other social networking profiles.

Rate the Referee

Simple site which allows you to rate Referees for sports matches. Stats/Profiles are kept on the referee along with video’s and pictures of the referee in action. People can then rate the referee and see if he favours one side over another..

WhichWidget

Site displaying every widget known to man and which one’s work well and which one’s don’t. Site offers thorough reviews of all widgets and allows users to rate and comment of their favourites.

Net Never Forgets

This site keeps a list of all known deaths i.e people who had myspace/bebo pages or blogs and passed away. A short profile of the person is displayed and it acts as a place for people to come and pay their respects by comments or video message etc… the idea being that their memory will always live on on the internet.

Heres what i think of you

Site which displays user submitted images of thousands of middle fingers making the shape of one big middle finger. Anytime anyone says something stupid on a forum or leaves a stupid comment somewhere, people link to ‘hereswhatithinkofyou’.

Off with your Head

This site displays a list of famous people. Users get to chop someone’s head off once a day (every 24 hours). This is basically if a celebrity does something stupid or a football manager is no good. The users get to decide who’s head is put on the chopping board. All chopped heads are the kept in the ‘already chopped’ section.

Rorrim (mirror spelt backwards)

This is a site which literally mirrors any text you have and want to disguise for some reason. You copy and paste it into an application and it will churn out the mirrored text, rendering it useless or double dutch to most people. It acts as a safety feature for valuable text files you may have.. When you need to read the text again, you simply return to the website and copy/paste the code back in and de-mirror it.

I dare you

This is a site which offers people the chance to make money. It displays a list of dares people have thought up of.. (e.g i dare you to run around a cinema naked). People then chip in money to the dare kitty and whoever takes on the dare gets the cash. Someone can reserve that bet and has 24 hours to complete it. They must then submit a video of themselves doing the bet and they will then get the money.

Energetically Challenged

A global community of energetically challenged (a.k.a lazy) people who demand that ‘lazy’ be removed from the english language and replaced with the more politically correct ‘energetically challenged’. The site starts a potention and gets members to sign it, then sends it off to the relevant bodies..

Hot, now you’re not

A website which displays a list of things/people which were hot once upon a time, but aren’t anymore. Targetting older women/men who’ve ‘lost it’ in terms of sex appeal. Also targets sports people and bands who’ve passed their sell by dates but are still playing and websites which were once cool, but aren’t anymore. Digg like feature which allows members to rate who’s not hot.

Charity Bypass

Site which displays a list of charities and beggars on the streets, their known collecting locations/times and generally known hot spots where they deploy people on the streets looking for sign ups or spare change.. Also displays begging scandals such as illegal begging at ATM machines, ticket machines etc..

Update: I actually brought this idea to life in april 2009, www.charitybypass.com is now live!

Brat Zone Alert

A website which displays a list of known hotels/apartments/housing estates/streets often full of kids. Also displays if the kids are attended or unattended and their age group. This is to let people know what they’re in for when they book a hotel or buy/rent a house/go visiting a city etc.

Queue Frustration

Users submit videos/images of ridiculous traffic jams/queues/congestion they get caught up in.. the site acts a place for those people to vent their anger and also as a warning for other people not to go near that particular airport/road/shop etc..

This Website is not very appealing. It needs more content. I think some of the ideas for websites are inapropriate.

Hey, these ideas are really interesting and good.

    come check out my website.

I'am looking for ideas on how to "spice it up" a little
  • The "dare website" idea has actually been in existence for a couple years now, see:

    www.bragster.com

While it's not for money anymore (it was in an earlier iteration, called "gottabet"), it certainly gives users the chance to create or take on dares, as well as show offf all the crazy/cool things they can do.
  • some will realy work ... but ... with a good marketing team
  • "Rorrim" is already out there in various formats. Check out rot13.com for example, not exactly the same, but accomplishes the same goal.
  • Idareme
I dare myself to steal the I dare you idea.....

I love it. Maybe I will give you some credit when I sell it to google for billions of dollars.
  • adi
Hey smemom, i have afew ideas of my own but i would just like to sell them if possible. I havent a clue about building/developing websites. Do you know wher i could go to sell an idea for a website?
  • selling an idea online is virtually impossible... say for example i want to 'buy' an idea - i'll want to know what the idea is before i buy, so you'd have to tell me :-)

i can then just not buy the idea, go away and do it myself or change it slightly etc... ideas are worth nothing and that's one thing experience has taught me :-)
  • breyhana-ariel
I totally love your ideas and want to know if it's okay if I use. The u hated, I dare you, super teddy, internet pyranha, depimp my ride, arse, rate the referee, net never forgets, here's what I think of you, and hot now you're not. With credit and a link to this page of course. Also totally for personal not commerical use.
  • be my guest! no credit is needed, but i'd like to know how you get on with these projects in the future :)
  • Hi

Smemon - or anyone else that fancies making one of the above ideas or a different idea - I'm a web designer based in the UK and looking for great ideas for new sites.

    Get in touch at http://www.broox.co.uk.

    Cheers

    Daniel
  • Willem
Wow 1 1/2 years later and this post is still receiving comments. Great post. Some of the ideas I wouldn't touch, but I really like the Dare idea.
I had a simple idea of my own just know, being that I'm bored. Just a simple engine that generates ideas of what to do when you're bored. Users can add ideas too through a simple text field. I think if something as basic as twitter can do well, a simple site like my idea should be able to do okay with proper execution
  • They just come from my own brain. I'm always seeing things and thinking of ways i could improve them or coming up with new ideas based on old ideas.

Hard to describe but usually i'll just ask myself what do i think people would want or use that currently doesn't exist or isn't fulfilling it's potential!
  • Love these ideas!! Great list!!

@smemon87, you mentioned there were more ideas where these came from? Do tell...

I also love the U hated idea, am working on something like that now.
  • anonymous
  • Ask egg!
  • Some ideas is good, and whether can do it really
  • SuperTeddy
Hey I love the super teddy idea! If it's ok i'm going to switch it around and try it out... Thanks for the ideas
  • Jonnii
Take it Aaron gave up on the idea. I was speaking to the fello that i gave my DT files away to and he has made some brill progress.

His website is overall about 60% complete, with all the graphic work already done, this looks like a promising website.

He reckons release date will be around the start of April 2009.

Looking forward to see how Smemon's original idea, with some of my input and over £3000 of input added together turns out!

  • I like the dare idea, too, just not touching that one here in the United States...the land of the free, the home of the lawsuits.
  • :)
  • Hello!!
What a laugh ive had reading your ideas. Some great ideas which surely could do pretty well! Ive been looking for a website idea for sometime now, im also at Uni and am making some good money off the web, (gambling portal).
Particulary like the dare/daretube idea. Reckon that could go well.
Great stuff, I will be watching with interest!
    Tom W
  • There are loads of dare websites around already however no-one has yet to promote theirs well.
  • Where is the website then Aaron?
  • Aaron: 9:31PM: I’ve finished atleast half of the coding.
Aaron: 9:36PM: I’ve finished all of the coding for the dare idea

Wow, man, you're fast...5 minutes to complete almost half a site. :)

BUT, I am here, as I have run out of ideas...30+ sites up and running now and need more ideas.

I've been offering friends 25% of total revenue for the idea; 50% if they provide the content and I build them. Let me know if you have an ideas you have been sandbagging on. :)
  • Jonnii
Stopped making the website "DareTube" as someone wanted to buy the website from me. As i didnt pay for the idea myself, i decided that i couldnt. I did alot of research and discovered that many people liked the idea but said they wouldnt spend money to use it. After discovering this i then gave my work away.

Thanks Smemon for the idea and the expirence. Good luck Aaron at making your version.
  • I like the super teddy idea. The mirror idea is also cool - maybe instead of mirroring the text it could be encrypted so that noone can break the cypher. Could have a passphrase you need to put in to get the text decyphered. If you type the wrong passphrase you end up with gliberish... Overall very cool ideas. Thanks.
  • looking forward to it Aaron... as for domains, i'm out... if i start thinking of domains i'll only end up buying them myself

makewords.com might help you though, or trigger off some sort of inspiration at least ;-)
  • Aaron
I've finished all of the coding for the dare idea and should be releasing a beta soon. I've tested on my private webpage and it seems to work very well. Now I just need to put in my name a slogan. Any other ideas for a domain name?
  • Aaron
I've been looking into the dare idea since the other person working on it hasn't done so well (no offense). I'm going to give you the credit when I finish and I'll post back. Any other ideas for the domain name? I've finished atleast half of the coding.
  • All extremely stupid ideas from a really bored nerd.
  • yeah, i guess it typical of ideas - the sound great and give you initial inspiration/hope, but when it comes down to hard work and graft, you tend to shy away and forget about the idea...

no good having great ideas unless you can put them in to action... that takes (a) time (b) money ;-)
  • Whatever happened to DareTube - sounded like a great idea, seems to have gone on the backburner though?
  • Very intersting ideas you have there, have you tried any of these youself?

I like the SuperTeddy idea, only thing is you'd likely get someone who won't bother posting it to the next person.
  • if it weren't for lines 1-3, that would almost past as a reasonable, non-offensive, adult post ;-)
  • brandon
wow, your an asshole. not only are these ideas unprofitable but you focus on sites that target others and/or have a bullshit scam concepts. are you retarded? you will go to court if you make a hate social networking site or try and sell a blank site. some ideas are ok but all wont make money. think of a specific task and be the best at it and stay neutral when making a site... even if your intentions are for fun people will likely be pretty pissed unless your just doing this for yourself
  • I have been searching for new ideas for months. When I could not find a web site that hosted new ideas, I opened my own. You can check it out at http://www.yousearchonce.com/. But, today I came accross yours and I like it. I am thinking to implement "I dare you" web site but not sure yet what content to publish.
  • Jay
Is anyone doing the I-Dare-You website properly yet? I've looked for simular and can't find it... I think its a cracking idea and one i might develop properly!

To expand on whats already been said, i think it would be great if people, who like making dares, create an account, then buy credits, these credits are used in the dares, so lets say there is a dare to do something, users of teh site can pay credits towards the dare, to build up the prize pool for someone interested in doing the dare. I think teh idea of someone "selecting the dare" and it being theres for a time period is also a good idea.

    Any further thoughts on this?

    Jay...
  • doodlemon
Brilliant ideas there! I personally like "U-hated" and "here's what i think of you". Good Job!
  • Jonny
Yeah, once i like everything, i will make sure there are no errors/mistakes, but for the minute im not that worried about it.

Thanks for the feedback markowe. Think you may just be right. I will have a bash at a new layout sometime in the next few days and see how it looks then give you a shout :)
  • Looks really interesting! Bit of a "serious" design though? shouldn't it be, like, zany and frivolous?!

By the way, I know it's only testing, but there are loads of mistakes in the copy on the front page - but I guess you knew that!
  • i'm cool with that, best of luck with it ;-)
  • I have finished the layout for the main part of the website and hosted it for you all to have a look at. Although most of the links dont work, forum and "click here" at the bottom of the page are the only working links :P (to get to the website, click on my name).

Have a look and leave a comment here (if Smemon is alright with that) of what you think about the layout.

If you have any idea's that would make it better please tell me and ill see what i can do. Other peoples thoughts are always welcome.

Want to contact me, email me at - jonnii@inbox.com

    Thanks again.
  • meso
I wanna join the arses website. I have a nice one.
  • meso
That one about the arses is genious!
  • Jonni
Ill put a link to a website you request Smemon. Around 60% complete now, markowe cheers for the offer of beta testing. I will have a link put here first for anyone who wants to be exclusive :P or to beta test. I will also be needing a few mods, one to start but if everything goes accoring to plan then i will need more in the furture. I will have a post on the website explaining this as time goes on, but i will keep you guys in mind should any of you want a mod placement.

Shame, idareyou.com would have been great :P
  • Sierra Kilo
Hi I'll spare some hours on this one. I do php and related stuff if it helps

    SK
  • daretube - a nice name if you did indeed get it

be sure to give me a mention when you make it big
  • Hey, you are serious about this!

Oh boy, I would hate to think anyone actually TRIED one of my ideas...!

Just for the record, I for one am interested to see how it turns out! So make sure you post here. Hey, I might even help beta test, as long as I don't have to do anything that might further jeopardise my already-tarnished reputation!

DareTube is a good idea, just hurry up and register it so some lowlife doesn't squat it. Shame IDareYou.com is already squatted...
  • Jonni
    Update to last post:

Getting quite close to having this made, id say around 50% there. Hoping to have it uploaded and ready for 1st May 08. Look forward to seeing you there ;)

Got this name at the mo: DareTube. Any idea's?
  • This is a site which offers people the chance to make money.

Lovin this idea, actually going to have a bash at making it. If i get anywhere, ill keep you guys informed.

ps. Smemon, if i make a million, ill remember you lol :P
  • I.O.
Great ideas!! Love that blank website! i think its great to make pointless websites for no reason. Instead of '40 years of work', you can make retarded websites that people either laugh at and idea you or hate you. Find there reactions for example a good website: youfail.org!
  • I like it! Hey, are you sure you wanna be GIVING these ideas away - one of them could get you rich rich rich!

Actually, I did something similar at http://www.squidoo.com/get-rich-off-the-net/ - don't know if anyone's got rich off my "Get Rich Off the Net" ideas yet...

But I just can't be bothered to make the effort, so I thought I'd at least let someone else use them..!
  • mrkenish
Ideas aint bad, however it seems like that Teddy bear idea has been stolen from the Amelie film!
  • I liked the referee one and the mirror idea also, i'd say it would be a big hit. Nice ideas mate, keep 'em coming :)
  • yeah that's one of my personal favourites, thought it wouldn't go down well though with the Politically Correct police

it would be handy though.. perhaps a list of possible detours to avoid them..
  • lmao man i love the CharityBypass idea...i think i might just steal it!!
  • yeah ravi, i guess most of them would be aimed at younger/crazy/fun loving college people..

i can't think like an older person yet as i'm only 20, it's much easier to think like a young person if i am one.

come back in 20 years time and my ideas will have changed  it will be 'marriage/mortgage/parenting' related stuff then
  • Wonderfully unique ideas. I would say each of these seem to be geared at younger generations.
  • The depimping one is a good one - nothing irritates me more than go-faster-stripes on a Fiesta
  • dammit, just when you think you have 18 original ideas, you find out some have been done

ah well, great minds think alike and all that
  • Some amusing ideas - nice post!

Rate the Referee (for football): Similar to: www.ratetheref.co.uk

Net Never Forgets: Similar to: MyDeathSpace.com ;)

It took me up to 'De-pimp my ride' to think 'Digg' - but it seems I was beaten to it!
  • indeed, plenty more where all of that came from too
  • I like the Super Teddy, Rate the Referee, Net Never Forgets and the Hot, now you’re not ideas!

    You have been thinking!
